Leslie Norman Walter
Leslie Norman Walter passed away peacefully in his Moose Jaw home on December 11th, 2013. Born in Sussex, England on March 9th, 1919, he came to Canada at the age of six with his parents Lawrence and Mary Walter, when they immigrated to Canada and settled in Moose Jaw. Les would tell you his life was filled with wonderful experiences, a loving family, an opportunity to serve his country, a warm and caring 65-year partnership with his dear wife Mary, lifelong friends, and more joy and happiness then he ever thought was possible. As a young man, Les was a very talented athlete. He played junior hockey with the Moose Jaw Canucks and was invited to the New York Rangers training camp. However, duty called and he joined the Regina Rifles and served overseas from 1939 to 1946 in England, France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. He served selflessly, as demonstrated by the many medals he was awarded during his service to his country. When Les returned home after the war ended, he made Moose Jaw his home. He married Mary Holman and together they raised their family of six children. He worked for CP Express and farmed in the Moose Jaw area. Also, he was a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge in Moose Jaw. Les lived his life as an exemplary role model, a loving husband, a supportive and nurturing father, and generous contributor to his community. Les was predeceased by his parents, Lawrence and Mary; his siblings: Connie Turner, Lori Parnell, Stan Walter, Ernie Walter and Gord Walter; his grandson, Jason Bruce; and the love of his life, his wife Mary. Mourning the loss of a father, grandfather and great-grandfather are his children: Carol (Dennis) Evans of Moose Jaw; Marg (Ed) Olfert of Moose Jaw; Ken (Vicki) Walter of Saskatoon; Barry (Tenny) Walter of Saskatoon, Joan Murray of Leland, North Carolina, and Brent (Anita) Walter of Calgary, AB. He also leaves behind 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. In the past several years as his health began to deteriorate, Les was extremely grateful for the love and support he received from his children and from the numerous caregivers who enabled him to remain in his home until his passing. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date, which will be announced in the Moose Jaw Times Herald. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you contribute to a charity of your choice in memory of a life well lived. Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane. Gary McDowell, Funeral Director 306-693-4550.
