Anne Grace Szuch
Anne Grace Szuch, aged 100 years of Moose Jaw, SK passed away on Friday, March 23rd, 2018. Anna (Anne) Bakanec was born on her parent’s homestead just east of Fox Valley, SK on June 27th, 1917. She was the oldest child of Thomas Bakanec and Maria Mican. Anne grew up on the farm and attended Majestic School. In 1939 she graduated from Success Business College in Saskatoon, SK. Anne worked in 1940 in Mantario Municipal Office, located on a farm in Eyre, SK for 6 months before moving to Moose Jaw. She started working for A.L. Anderson, later known as Anderson-Pugsley, the John Deere dealership until the spring on 1948. On October 18th, 1947, Anne married Stephen (Steve) Szuch in Fox Valley and soon the babies started arriving. While her family of 6 children were growing, she sewed for them and herself, grew a big garden, canned vegetables, fruit and meat, and cleaned Steve’s fish. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, which she did until she was into her 90’s. Anne made afghans for her children, grandchildren, and most of her great-grandchildren. Anne was a Charter Member of the St. Michael’s Council of the Catholic Women’s League and held every executive office numerous times. She also devoted many hours to convening their bazaar and funeral lunches. Anne enjoyed bowling very much and was Secretary of the Lynbrook Bowling League for 12 years. She also bowled in Willowdale and Major Ladies Leagues. Anne became involved with coaching youth bowling and a highlight of her life was coaching her bantom girls at Nationals. Anne was area captain for the Heart Fund for several years, and often canvassed for other charities or worked elections if asked. Anne was never one to sit idly. In later years she spent several years working on her family history. Another highlight of her life was when Joyce took her and her sister Agnes to Europe to see some of the people and places she had discovered while working on her ancestry. Anne lived in her own house until her dementia forced us to move her. She lived at Chateau St. Michaels for three years and has spent the last 5 years at Extendicare. The family would like to thank the staffs at Maguire Centre, Chateau St. Michaels and Extendicare for being so good to our Mom and for taking “szuch” good care of her these last years. Anne was predeceased by her mother in 1970 and father in 1975; brothers: Anthony in 1934, Frank in 1940, Thomas Jr. in 1983, Aloys (Louis) in 2000, and James in 2001; sisters: Josephine Hudec in 1982, Justina Hudec in 2012 and Agnes Buye in 2014; husband, Steve in 2006; and son, George in 2009.
