Roscoe Milton Steele
It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden death of Roscoe Milton Steele at his new home in Chaplin, on Wednesday, March 17th, 2010. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, March 22nd, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. in Moose Jaw Funeral Home. Rev. Doug Shepherd of Central Lutheran Church will officiate. Legion Rites will be observed by Bill Hrechka of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #59. A time of visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, March 20th, 2010 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in Moose Jaw Funeral Home. Roscoe was predeceased by his grandparents, George and Lona Steele and Durward and Clara Castiday; his parents, Mildred and Casey Steele; his son Patrick; grandson, David; and father-in-law, Mel Dokken. He leaves to mourn his wife, Marcene, of Chaplin; sons, Scott (Chris) Steele of Fort Saskatchewan and Jim (Lynette) Steele of Edmonton; daughters Angela (John) Bird of Moose Jaw and Candy Steele of Calgary; and grandchildren, Megan and Paige Steele; Sontona, Jaqualene, Ryen and Eryck Bird; Jamie, Lindsay and Josh Steele; and Nathan and Patrick Steele. He is also survived by his sisters, Marlene Steele and Joyce (Ron) Walter of Moose Jaw; aunt, Ruby Davey of Moose Jaw; the mother of his children, Rev. Marjorie Steele of Westlock, Alta; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and special long-time friends. Roscoe was born December 16th, 1933 at Parkbeg where he was raised and attended school. His career path took him to the department of highways, various construction crews and eventually to Canada Post in Moose Jaw, Edmonton and Regina. He was a long-time sports enthusiast, playing hockey and baseball and curling in various leagues. He later coached minor girls’ fastball, enjoyed taking in hockey games and spent many hours watching curling, hockey and football on television. Roscoe was an enthusiastic and active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, serving on numerous committees, working his way through various executive positions and serving two years as President, the first associate member to ever hold that position with Branch No. 59. For his efforts he received various certificates of appreciation, and most recently received his life membership pin, Meritorious Service Medal and the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal. He also served as Zone and District commander and spent many enjoyable hours travelling to the various braches under his command. Roscoe was also involved in other community organizations. Despite his diagnosis and treatment for cancer, his spirits were upbeat and he was thankful for the ability to carry on with the volunteer work he loved.
