Mary Dora Spence (nee Ens)
August 25, 1927 to October 1st, 2007
Mary Dora Spence was born into a farm family in Lost River, Saskatchewan. Here she was taught, along with her 6 brothers and 1 sister, to love and honour God in all her ways. This is a commitment she took very seriously, and throughout her life she was an example to her family and her community in her display of genuine Christian love for others. After attending Two Rivers Bible School, and commencing nurse’s college at the Battleford’s Hospital, Mary married Ken Spence in 1953, and began the life of a railroader’s wife, moving from Whitefox, to Herschel, to Vanguard, to Luseland, and raising her five children in CPR stations until 1970 when Mary and Ken moved to Kerrobert and into their own home. Mary’s Christian commitment and active kindness for her community extended itself to her work as activity director at Pioneer Haven, hospital visitation, hosting Bible Studies, helping with church services at the senior’s home, and years of involvement in the Sunday School program at Luseland Alliance Church. She loved flowers and gardening, and took pride in her display of tulips every spring. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, and was never too busy to spend time with her family, continually put their needs ahead of her own. She was still a farm girl at heart, and loved helping out at her daughter’s farm for seeding and harvest, and spending time at her son’s cabin at Turtle Lake. Mary was an expert at doing small things with great love. She loved people and she loved Jesus, and we were proud to have her as the wife, mother and grandmother of our family. Mary is survived by Ken, her loving husband of 54 years, two brothers, Wilfred and Jake Ens, her sister-in-laws, Mary and Marilyn, and one brother in law, Helmut Schmidt, her five children and their spouses, Rhoda and Myles Cairns, Eric and Susan Spence, Beryl and Ryonald Rosenthal, Garth and Jan Spence, and Janet and Dale McDowell, 13 grandchildren; Nicole, Ian, Shaun, Kristine, Kathryn, Jordan, Phaedra, Toni, Ashley, Megan, Joshua, Miranda and Dallas, and two great grandchildren, Chase and McKenna. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Luseland Bible Camp. Funeral services will be held at Luseland Alliance Church on October 5th, 2007, at 2:00 pm. Interment to follow at Luseland Cemetery.
