Betty Catherine Schultz
Betty Catherine Schultz went to be with her Lord and Saviour on Monday, December 10, 2007 after many years of dealing with difficult health problems. Betty was born on the family farm at Herbert, Saskatchewan on March 20, 1940 to John D. and Tina (Thiessen) Schultz. She attended the Los Angeles country school up to Grade 6 and completed her high school education in Herbert, Saskatchewan. She accepted Jesus Christ into her life at age 12, after watching a Billy Graham film “Mr. Texas” and was baptized and joined the Herbert Mennonite Brethren Church at age 15. After High School, she attended Briercrest Bible Institute at Caronport, graduating in April 1961. She worked in the Herbert Hospital for a summer, as the Lab and Xray Technician. In the fall of 1961, she enrolled at the Teachers’ College in Regina, receiving her teaching certificate the following summer. Thus began her teaching career. She taught in schools at Donnellyville, Main Centre, Hodgeville and Herbert. Due to chronic laryngitis, a career change was required. She enrolled in a secretarial course at the Saskatchewan Technical Institute in 1969, graduating in 1970. She worked as a secretary with Bible Christian Union in New York, New York but, due to allergies returned to Canada and worked in the Canadian Sunday School Mission Head Office in Winnipeg from 1971 to 1973. In the fall of 1973, she took the opportunity to move closer to home and filled the position of Secretary in the Caronport High School and taught Grades 9 to 12 typing. In 1980, her allergies became so severe that she was no longer able to work outside the home. Throughout her life, she sought to help others and was concerned about their eternal destiny. She worked with children in her local church as long as her health allowed and looked for ways to show acts of kindness wherever possible. Although life was very difficult for her the last twenty plus years, she rarely complained and continued to have a great compassion for others. Betty was predeceased by her parents, John D. Schultz in 1990 and Tina Schultz in 1995, and a nephew in infancy. She leaves to mourn her passing, sisters Dorothy (Lyman) Reed of Caronport, Saskatchewan, Joan (Ian) Hendry of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, brothers John Schultz of Matsqui, BC and Robert (Emerald) Schultz of Herbert, Saskatchewan; nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and friends. The Memorial service was held on Friday, December 14, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. in Edwards Chapel at Caronport, Saskatchewan with Rev. Dr. Lyman E. Reed officiating. A family interment service at the Caronport Cemetery was held prior to the service. Pallbearers were: Bob Schultz, Terry Thiessen, Don Reed, Ben Reed, Ron Dick and Carl Hinderager. Pianist was Mrs. Ivy Veysey. Special music was provided by Peter Martens and Terry Thiessen. Memorial donations may be made to the Gideons International or Briercrest College and Seminary.
