Melvin Allan Pomeroy
Melvin Allan Pomeroy of Riverhurst, Saskatchewan passed away on Sunday, October 19th, 2008. The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Riverhurst Community Hall. Rev. Rick McCorrister and Wendy Gibson will officiate. Mel was the first son born to John T. and Lula Pomeroy on February 2nd, 1915 at Bridgeford, Saskatchewan. He had two older sisters, Muriel and Hazel and a younger brother Arnold. When Mel was 6 they moved to the Pomeroy Farm, to be closer to Boldenhurst School. He enjoyed the school years, at Boldenhurst and at LCBI in Outlook. He also took electrical schooling in Regina. On July 10th, 1945 Mel married Dorothy Deener. They had two surviving children, Carol and Gary. Mel and Dorothy were a hard working unit that many looked up to. After the war, Arnold came to join Mel in a joint farming career. They were very aggressive and had a fairly large farm and started a road construction business. They had a lot of labour to keep both the farm and the construction going and many local lads will say that they worked with them. Mel and Dorothy also went to Carragana and Porcupine Plaine to break land in the 50’s. Farming was Mel’s way of life, and he had a good head on his shoulders for machinery, fixing and innovative ways of making it work. Mel and Dorothy loved to spend time with their son Gary, and their daughter Carol and her family. The grandaughters, Leah, Lori and Lana made his world and after Leah had two daughters, Hailey and Kassidy, his world was complete.Mel was on many boards, and was a devoted member of the directors of Palliser Park, Regency Manor, Masonic Lodge and Riverhurst Lions. He was also the Reeve of Maple Bush Municipality for many years. He leaves a lasting legacy of his life in many ways – the kindness and generosity that he bestowed on many; the carpentry, electrical, plumbing and other skills that he maintained; and of course his sense of humour. He was a very patient, kind and true friend, and was a great mediator. Mel was predeceased by his parents, John T. and Lula Pomeroy, his siblings, Muriel (Stewart), Hazel (Arthur), and Arnold. He was also predeceased by two children, Ross and Lois. Mel is survived by his wife of 63 years Dorothy, his daughter Carol(Neil) and son Gary (Deb); three granddaughters, Leah (Tim) Palmer, Lori (T.J.) Kube and Lana; two great granddaughters Hailey and Kassidy; sister-in-law Florance of Moose Jaw and his buddy Turbo. Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorial donations may be made in Mel’s name to the Central Butte and District Health Care Foundation, Box 582, Central Butte, Sask. S0H 0T0.
