Arthur “Edgar” Philpott
Arthur “Edgar” Philpott of Central Butte, Sk. passed away suddenly at the age of 97 years young on April 15th, 2011. He is survived by his wife Lily; daughters Vionne (Reg) Stewart, Florence (Bob) Petersen, Rosalie (Ken) MacKenzie; son Bill Philpott; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; sister in law Hattie Gane; and numerous nieces and nephews (all very special to him). He is predeceased by his parents Maude and William Philpott; sisters Doris Paton, Enid Gould; brother Charles Philpott; and grandson David Petersen. Edgar was born October 29th, 1913 in Strasbourg, Sk. where he lived until the age of 14. At that time, his family moved to the Lawson district and then to the Robin Hood School district and eventually to the farm at Central Butte. He married Lily Anderson (Nee Gane) in July 1958. He always said he got three for the price of $6 as Lily brought Vionne and Florence with her. He farmed and ranched in the Central Butte area for many years. Besides Edgar’s family, the love of his life was his cows. He spent many years in the purebred cattle business. He, and the cows he raised, won many awards throughout North America. He was always most proud of his “Builder of the Breed” award given to him by the American Shorthorn Association in 1976 for the outstanding contribution he made to the Shorthorn breed. He began raising Charolais cattle in 1967. He soon became a huge supporter of the breed and was convinced they were the best cattle in the world, which he still constantly advocated. Edgar had many interests. He was a huge supporter of the 4-H, the Agricultural Society, all phases of the cooperative movement and the CCF. In later years, his interests turned to art collecting, gardening, and bridge tournaments. His grandchildren love to remember his storytelling, his roping grandkids in the living room, silly rhymes, and being chased with his teeth. He always tackled everything with passionate enthusiasm, (like planting 3000 onions at the age of 95)! Edgar had a keen interest in people with a remarkable ability to recall people’s names and faces. His intelligence and wit made him many friends of all ages and he taught us all “you can never have too many friends… you never know when you might need one”. A come and go Celebration of Edgar’s life will be held on Thursday, April 21st, 2011 from 2 – 4:00 p.m. in the Central Butte Senior’s Centre with a program beginning at 2:00. No flowers please, due to allergies. Those so wishing may make a memorial donation in Edgar’s name to Iver Main Place, Box 550, Central Butte, Sk. S0H 0T0.
