Kathleen Phillips
Kathleen Phillips quietly passed away on Wednesday, September 2nd, 2015 at the age of 95 years. She was born on February 15th, 1920 on the homestead just outside of Burgis, SK to William and Nettie Habuza. Kathleen (known to her friends as Kay) was the second youngest of 9 children. Kathleen attended school at Sandy River School by Theodore. She went to work at the early age of 15 helping out at a farming residence. In 1938 she moved to Moose Jaw to be with 3 of her sisters and mother. Kathleen met the love of her life in May of 1942 and was united in marriage to Morris Phillips on December 27th, 1942. They were married for 60 years. Together they had three daughters: Carolyn (George) McLean from Ottawa, ON, Susan (Gerald) Declare from Swift Current, SK and Christine (late Don) Olynyk from Yorkton, SK. Kathleen also had 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Morris passed away in 2003 and Kathleen continued to live alone in her own home until August of 2014. She then moved in with her daughter Susan and son-in-law Gerald Declare in Swift Current, SK. She passed away in Yorkton, SK. Kathleen and Morris travelled extensively as Morris was in the RAF and RCAF, and were stationed overseas in Germany for four years as well as England. While overseas they were able to travel and saw many countries. In 1972 Morris retired from the Air Force after 33 years. They then moved to Birch Hills, SK where he ran a Gulf Station and Restaurant and Kathleen was the cook in the restaurant. In 1986 they moved back to Moose Jaw, where they first met. Kathleen loved to garden. She always planted a big garden and loved canning and pickling. Together they often went camping with family and friends. She was also an avid knitter, crocheted, loved to sew and made quilts, all to give to family. Kathleen loved to cook and bake and the house always smelled of something delightful and tasty. She also loved a good game of scrabble and loved to play cards with her family. She had a great love for reading books and was always reading. Kathleen was a very generous person and always had something to give to each of her family members. She was predeceased by her four sisters: Lena, Ann, Mary and Olga; four brothers: Jack, John, Mike and Steve; and her son-in-law, Donald. The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, September 11th, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. in Moose Jaw Funeral Home. Pastor Marvin Seaborg will officiate. A Time of Visitation for family and friends will take place on Thursday, September 10th, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in Moose Jaw Funeral Home. As an expression of sympathy, donations in Kathleen’s name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Saskatchewan Inc., 301 – 2550 12th Ave, Regina, SK S4P 3X1.
