Vivian Joyce Meikle
Gently, peacefully, and surrounded by her children, on Sunday, November 20th, 2022, Vivian Joyce Meikle joined her daughter Nancy.
Vivian was born in 1928. While living in Pennant, SK, her parents, Edward and Matle Housego welcomed her younger brother Ian in 1931.
In 1948 Vivian moved to Moose Jaw, SK and completed her training as a registered nurse at the General Hospital. In 1950 she married Robert Meikle, and they welcomed five children into their lives. Together with being a busy mother, she pursued her career as a nurse in a variety of settings: Moose Jaw Union Hospital, Victorian Order of Nurses, Director of Home Care, and finally as a Public Health nurse upon completing her public health diploma at the University of Saskatchewan.
Vivian also gave of her time and talents to many organizations including both the local and provincial Multicultural Councils, the Scottish Society, St. Andrew’s United Church community, and the Order of the Eastern Star, amongst many others. Her contributions were recognized with numerous awards throughout the years.
Most people who knew her would also remember that in her “spare time” she was an avid crafter and they likely have something she made and gifted to them.
In spite of all of her activities, she always put her family first. Her family is currently spread out across Western Canada, and she travelled frequently to spend time with her children and their families. She also travelled many times to New Zealand while her daughter Nancy lived there and joined her on many occasions while she was working on healthcare projects in locations around the world.
She was predeceased by her parents; the father of her children; her daughter, Nancy; and infant granddaughter, Robyn. Vivian is survived by her brother, Ian (Billie) Housego and niece, Joellen Housego (Timo) of Vancouver, BC; daughter, Pat (Mac) Aldred of Moose Jaw and grandchildren Brodi (Pam), Riel (Gill), and Merran (Jesse); daughter, Sandra (Shane) Nichol of Calgary, AB and grandchildren Aaron (Kim) and Mike (Cathy); daughter, Judy (Ed) Fredeen of Medicine Hat, AB and grandchildren Tristan, Keisha, Caitlin (Elias) and Garrett (Randi); and son, Rob Meikle (Catherine) of Winnipeg, MB. She also loved to visit and adored her thirteen great-grandchildren.
As we reflect together with friends, colleagues, family, and caregivers who have been part of her 94-year journey, recurrent adjectives include kind, (fiercely) independent, resilient, determined, and giving. Vivian was all of these and more. Her house was a gathering place for all and a home not only to her immediate family but also to many others who became extended family to us all.
The family would like to thank and acknowledge all the staff and her resident family at Providence Place where she lived for the past 17 months. Though she found the loss of her independence and mobility a challenge, she faced it with her usual grace, and we are so grateful for the care she received and the new friendships she developed.
The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, November 26th, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Andrew’s United Church, 60 Athabasca St E, Moose Jaw, SK with interment to follow at a later date. Wouldn’t it be great to see lots of purple! Friends and family who are unable to attend in person are invited to join via live stream on the day of the service at www.youtube.com/@Mrdavis306. She and my mom hung together. Barrels of fun. Sorry for the loss.
So sorry to hear of Viv’s passing. Though I am out of the country at present, I was fortune to share a smile with her just last week as she was informing me that she was “doing pretty good for an old girl”. That she was. And yet, I guess things slip away rather quickly sometimes.
My heart-felt condolences go out to the entire Meikle clan.
Pat and family

We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of dear Vivian. She was a long time member of St. Andrew’s church and was such a beautiful soul. I remember she loved the colour purple and was quite often wearing a purple outfit. She was a lady who had many adventures in her life and had great wisdom. Our deepest sympathy to all of her family and friends on her passing. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. May she rest in peace.
I worked with Vivian in Public Health Nursing in Moose Jaw. She was a wonderful workmate. She retired before I did and I always so enjoyed running into her and catching up. She was always caring and compassionate and what an interesting life she led.Sending love to all Vivian’s family at this time.
To my dear cousins and your families, I extend my heartfelt condolences to you on the loss of your wonderful motherand grandmother. You will miss her at every turn in this next while. I am remembering some of the wonderful times that we had together as kids and the special relationship that our mother’s had with one another. Auntie Viv, was a dear friend and cousin to mom and they really enjoyed each other’s company. I remember the many visits we had at the lake and the time that dad and auntie Viv shared the driving out to the coast for Grandpa Housego’s 80th birthday. They kept driving and driving until it was too late to get a motel so we ended up sleeping in the van, in a parking lot in Blue River. On the way back we stopped at our cousin’s home in Pentiction, picked a box load of cherries off their tree and drove back to Moose Jaw. In the morning after sitting out of the fridge all night in a box, there were worms all over the counter! It was 1976 and that day was the opening ceremonies to the Summer Olympics in Montreal. I remember watching the ceremony from auntie Viv’s beautiful living room in her beloved home. It was lovely to be able to partake in Auntie Viv’s remembrance service via youtube. So very sorry that I could not be with you all today. Sending love and prayers to you all.
