John (aka Casey) Marteniuc
John (aka Casey) Marteniuc of Moose Jaw, SK, passed away on Monday, January 27th, 2014 at the age of 93 years. Born in Moose Jaw to Nickolas and Mary (Zonovia) Marteniuc, John attended Empire Public School and later Moose Jaw Technical High School. On September 19th, 1951 he was married to Fern Marteniuc (nee Jackson) and shared his life with her in their Maple Street home until they moved into an apartment a few years ago. John volunteered for service on August 19th, 1941 and served with No. 8 Canadian General Hospital, Royal Canadian Engineers and the South Saskatchewan Regiment. John saw action in the liberation of France and Holland where he was wounded on December 13th, 1944. For his duty, John received the 1939-1945 Star, France-Germany Star, Defense Medal, CVSM and Clasp, and War Medal 1939-1945 which he proudly displayed at all of the Veteran events he could attend. In 2003, he was awarded a lifetime membership to the Anavets (and was the longest-serving member in the Moose Jaw club), an organization John enjoyed because of the camaraderie and friendship it provided. Following WWII, John returned to work with the Canadian Pacific Railway where he retired in 1982 with over 44 years of service as a Fireman, Engine Wiper and Engineer. He was predeceased by his sister, Jenny (Eugenia) Owen. John is survived by his wife, Fern; sisters, Elsie Heshka and Minnie Mikula (and their respective families); and nephew of Auntie Fern, Leonard Ward. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 1st, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. in Moose Jaw Funeral Home. Jim Sikorski will be the speaker. In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s name may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
