Cyril Lacey
Cyril Lacey of Providence Place, Moose Jaw passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 12th, 2013, at the age of 90 years. Cyril was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, England, on April 15th, 1923. He married Dorothy Mary Wilcox in 1942. As a radar operator in the RAF, he was posted to the Isle of Man, India and Burma. After WWII he taught in West Walton and Runcorn, England. In 1957 he emigrated with Dorothy and their three sons to Canada. Acquiring a B.Ed. and a B.A. from the U of S, Regina Campus, he taught for the Sturgis School Unit (music supervisor) and in Lintlaw (principal), Weyburn (Queen Elizabeth School–principal), Gull Lake (principal) and Zenon Park, SK. After retirement he and Dorothy moved to Tisdale. Dorothy passed away in 1997. Cyril married Velma Campbell in 1998 and they lived in Melfort until 2011. For the last three years he has lived in Moose Jaw. A music lover, Cyril sang in and directed choirs in schools, communities and churches, as well as playing in and sometimes directing marching bands. He was a member of the Legion, the Masons and the Shrine. He attended the Anglican Church regularly but had connections also with the Roman Catholic Church in Zenon Park and the Coteau Hills Bible Church in Mortlach. At one point in his teaching career, he was president of a Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation local. He served a term as Mayor of Zenon Park, in which capacity he welcomed Princess Margaret on a visit to that community. He loved to garden and his homes always were accented by beautiful flower beds. He enjoyed playing at least one round of golf every year as long as he could. Cyril is survived by his wife, Velma; his sons: Peter of Winnipeg, Stephen (Dawn) of Yellowknife and Nigel (Collette) of Calgary; his step-daughter, Darlene of Melfort; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and relatives in Australia and the United Kingdom. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 23rd, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in St. Aidan Anglican Church, 124 1st Ave NE, Moose Jaw, SK followed immediately by an informal memory-sharing gathering for all who remember Cyril. In lieu of flowers, donations in Cyril’s memory can be made to St. Aidan Anglican Church, 124 1st Ave NE, Moose Jaw, SK S6H 0Y8.
