Florence Ida Elizabeth Hunchuk
Florence Ida Elizabeth Hunchuk “Flo” passed away peacefully on September 25th, 2017 at the age of 90 years. Born in Crane Valley and raised on the family farm in the same district, she moved to Moose Jaw at the age of 14 to attend high school. She completed her studies at the Academy of Our Lady of Sion in 1945, then went onto nursing school graduating in 1948 from the Providence Hospital Training School for Nurses with the honour of class valedictorian. She married George in 1949 and had 47 happy years together raising 5 children in their south hill home. When her children could manage on their own she resumed her nursing career, retiring at the end of 1989 after many years of service at the Providence Hospital. After retirement George and her took numerous trips and vacations with many centred around hockey, baseball, golfing and family. Flo enjoyed 10 pin bowling, ice skating, walking and especially golfing. She loved listening and dancing to old time music. In her later years after George passed away suddenly in 1996 she formed a close friendship with long-time family friend John. Together they shared many outings such as golfing, skating, going out for suppers and especially dancing. She was a great wife and mom, wonderful grandmother, dedicated nurse, caring sister and friend. Predeceased by her parents Alvin Chase and Alma Chase, husband George, granddaughter Nicole, sisters Francis and Ilene, brother Orin (Bud), half-sister Evelyn and half-brothers Harland and Wilfred. Flo will be lovingly remembered and survived by her dear friend and dance partner John Symenuk; son Doug Hunchuk; daughters: Bev (Garth) Gray, Cathie Hunchuk (Randy Passmore), Sharon (Hugh) Nickel and Julie (Randy) Simonneau; grandchildren: Greg Hunchuk, Carmen (Shaun) Hicke, Caroline Gray (Paul Watson) Joel Passmore, Robyn (Jeff) Mayer, Erin Passmore (Brentyn Krekoski), Michael Nickel, Jessica Nickel, Jacqueline Simonneau and Colin Simonneau; great-grandchildren: Clara and Adilyn Hicke, Eva Watson, Mitchell and Molly Mayer; sister Gladys Whiteside; brothers Bill (Marlene) Chase and Ernie (Susan) Chase and many numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Her family would like the staff of Extendicare Nursing Home for their care and kindness given to Flo over the many years she was a resident. Funeral Services will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 4th, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in Moose Jaw Funeral Home with Pastor Cory Steinson officiating. Interment will take place at Rosedale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Florence’s name can be made to the Alzheimer Society, 301 – 2550 12th Avenue, Regina, SK. S4P 3X1.
