William Don (Bill) Henderson
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William Don (Bill) Henderson of Moose Jaw, SK on Tuesday, January 2nd, 2018. Outliving all of his siblings: Thomas, Grace, Bob, Jean, Toots, Bruce, and Jim, Bill was born sixth of eight children on February 13th, 1926 in Lumsden, SK to James and Elizabeth Henderson. Predeceased by his first wife, June in 1975, Bill is survived by his wife, Bertha; sons, Bruce (Penny) and Lloyd (Brenda); daughter, Joan (James) Cathcart; and Bertha’s children: Marion Butler, Patti (Brian) Chadwick, and Pam Grendus. On June 4th, 1944, Bill enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy’s Fleet Air Arm beginning a yearlong adventure, much of it in Britain, training to become a pilot. Hostilities in Europe ended shortly after he had soloed in a Tiger Moth bi-plane. In the late 1940’s Bill signed on with the C.P.R. working out of Regina. In 1950, with a new family in tow, Bill moved to Moose Jaw as a brakeman, working for many years on the North Portal Run. He retired in 1985 as senior conductor on the famed “Canadian” passenger train. Following his working days, Bill enjoyed volunteer driving and assisting Bert with her duties associated with church charities and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Since their marriage in 1979, Bill and Bert have welcomed 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild into their combined family. Bill was predeceased by stepsons, Mike and Dennis Schuett, and step-daughter, Shelley Burns. Bill left us peacefully, alert and comforted in the company of his loving wife. He waited to say his goodbyes to all of us before being accepted into the arms of Jesus. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 6th, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. in Moose Jaw Funeral Home. Dave Foley will officiate and interment will take place at a later date. The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care and support provided, over the period of Bill’s brief stay at FHHR, by the staff of the Emergency Unit and in particular, Dr. M. Niaz. Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane. Calvin Gammel, Funeral Director 306-693-4550
