John Gailey
It is with great sadness the family of John Gailey announce his passing on Friday, May 5th, 2017. John, 76, passed away peacefully at home, losing his battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his parents; son, Shawn; and sisters, Judy and Shirley. John is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Donna; daughter, Judy Rice (Murray); son, Darin Gailey (Dana); daughter-in-law, Barbara Gailey; grandchildren: Amber Makuch, Devyn Vipond, Sean Rice, Tyler Gailey, Jordan Gailey, and Kalie Mentanko; as well as 7 great-grandchildren. John started his military career in Moose Jaw, SK. He spent many years in the Canadian Forces, traveling across Canada as well as Europe. He was an active sportsman and still holds a record or two in baseball. He was a fantastic pitcher who was scouted to play pro ball but decided to join the service which offered his family a more stable lifestyle. While posted to Comox, BC, where he retired from the service, he enjoyed the fishing and found a new love, golf. After owning his own business in BC, the family decided to move back to Moose Jaw. He began to work for the city and eventually was a caretaker at the Moose Jaw Public Library until he retired. Anyone who knew John knows that “retired” just meant busy full time doing the things he loved. John was an avid hunter and fisherman to which his long-time friend of over 50 years, Garry can attest. He loved golf, hunting, golf, fishing, golf. John also decided to learn how to do woodworking and created himself a workshop where beautiful scroll work was created. Retirement meant golfing at the Lynbrook at every opportunity, where he also served on the board for many years. He played darts, was an active member of the Legion, the Wood Workers Guild, curling and in his spare time, drove cars for Enterprise and Murray Chev Olds. John also enjoyed time at the cabin with his family, the only down side was fitting it in around, golf. John will be missed by everyone who was touched by his charismatic personality. John, may the fairway be long and your shot be true. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 13th, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. in Moose Jaw Funeral Home with Pastor Marvin Seaborg officiating. As an expression of sympathy, donations in John’s name may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane.
