MARY DOREEN DRACKETT
October 23rd, 1927 – November 14th, 2019
Mary Doreen Drackett, aged 92 years of Moose Jaw, SK passed away on Thursday, November 14th, 2019.
Mary was born in the Ukraine. She and her family immigrated to Canada when she was a baby. The family farmed near Wishart, SK, where she also attended elementary school. She graduated from high school with honours from Central Collegiate, a senior at the age of 14. A believer in the power of all forms of knowledge for everyone without discrimination, Mary then attended Normal School to become a teacher and began teaching at the age of 16. Throughout her teaching career she taught elementary and high school, both rural and urban.
When she retired from teaching, she opened a boutique store called 2nd Look in the Town n Country Mall. After closing that business, she did some social work, moving on to become a realtor. She fully retired in the early 80’s.
Throughout her life, she belonged to a number of organizations. Her favourites being the Audubon Bird Society and Toastmistresses. She was an avid reader and spent many hours as a Docent with the Moose Jaw Public Library. She researched the Moose Jaw Tunnels, contributing to a number of films showcasing this historic piece of the community. You would often hear Mary humming a tune as she enjoyed all types of music and was a positive influence on her children and grandchildren to incorporate music into their lives.
She was predeceased by her parents, Konstantine (Kost) and Domna Cheberiak; younger brother, Taras Cheberiak; and husband, Stanley Drackett. Mary is survived by her children: Tom Drackett, Connie (Jim) Thiessen, Janie Drackett, and Rosemarie (Norm) Myers; as well as 8 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
In keeping with Mary’s wishes, a Private Family Service will be held at a later date.
“A mother’s love is always with her children. Losing a mother is one of the deepest sorrows a heart can know. But her goodness, her caring, and her wisdom live on – like a legacy of love that will surround and be with you always.”
Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane. Todd Sjoberg, Funeral Director 306-693-4550.
I’m so sorry for your loss, I always enjoyed my times with Aunt Mary, sadly they were not kept up as years passed, she was a fountain of information and you could count on her being right . I will always remember her smile and soft spoken words .
Thank you Margaret. We were so lucky to have her and we will really miss her, but she is in a better place now.
Sincere Thoughts & Sympathy. Keep your memories close to your heart, but share them with friends & family, so those memories never fade. Sending hugs.
