MURIEL DORMER (née: Bellamy)
I was born in 1924 (and lived to 100 years old). Born in St. Boswells, SSK, a small village that was born, thrived, and died after the “dirty thirties” decimated businesses and villagers moved away. My two brothers and I went to a four-room schoolhouse that had the “luxury” of indoor toilets!! I was teased at school as being a “holy roller” for my faith. My family moved to Moose Jaw, SK in the early 1940’s and I got my first job at 18 years old and worked for three years at Kresge’s, then worked at Christie Grant’s women’s department. I met Bill Dormer after WWII, dated for a couple of years, and married in 1947 in a ceremony held at 18 McDonald St (which is now McDonalds), my family home. As a married couple, we moved into a cute house at 1424 Hochelaga St W (price $1,600; $800 down, $15 monthly payments – no interest charged!). When our daughter started school and missed her arranged ride home in the winter of 1954, we bought a house at 626 Skipton Road, a couple of blocks from King Edward School. In 1964 the Dormer’s moved into a brand-new house at 939 Normandy Dr until about 1995 when we sold the house and moved into an apartment. Bill went into a care home about 2013 and passed away in 2015. I lived alone until 2020 when I moved in with my son and his wife, back at the same house on Normandy Drive. Eventually, I went into care at Pioneer Lodge, and I was ready to go into my “Heavenly Home” (which happened Tuesday, August 27th, 2024).
Mom still had excellent recall of her memories and clear thinking at 100 years old. She was the rock of the family and shared her love, sacrifices, wisdom, faith and her mental toughness with those she loved. She endeared herself with those she met and the staff who cared for her in her final months. She leaves to grieve, her children: Carolyn, Ken, Gord, Ron (Donna); grandchildren: Chad (Wendy), Cherise, Jared (Amie); seven great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews and their children.
A Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday, September 10th, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Rosedale Cemetery with Pastor Larry Hasmatali and Pastor Dave Nelson officiating. Come through the gates and follow the Dormer signs to gravesite. In lieu of flowers, donations in Muriel’s name may be made to the Moose Jaw Food Bank, 305 Fairford St W, Moose Jaw, SK S6H 1V8. Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane. Gary McDowell, Funeral Director 306-693-4550
Many years ago Muriel was one of a group of ladies that worked together doing and selling, liquid embrodery [Artex],and other crafts.I remember the exceitment when they moved to the new house. She was friends with my late Mother and Father in law,as they all had a connection to St Boswells. Rest in peace dear lady.
