Eugene Arthur Damour “Gene”
November 22nd, 1944-September 11th, 2018
Gene passed away on Tuesday, September 11th, 2018 just shy of his 74th birthday. He will join his mother, Marjorie (Grammie) and father, PeeWee (Gramps); and beloved grandson, Tanner Eugene Knull. Gene will be missed by his brothers, Ed (Barb) and Ron; daughters, Sherry (Shaun) Gray and Carla (Terry) Knull; granddaughters: Kristen, Kate and Kelsey; as well as other family and friends including long-time friend Jim Haliwyz. Gene had a love of animals and anything to do with wood. He spent many hours after his retirement from SaskTel in the shop and could build pretty much anything including shelves, cupboards and houses. He loved to carve and design using a scroll saw, and spend time attending his woodworking groups as well as craft shows. When he wasn’t in the shop he would spend time golfing or with family, or reading his favourite author Louis L’Amour. The family wishes to express their thanks to Dr. Van Heerden, and special thank you to the staff at Providence Place Moose Jaw for their loving care. A Private Family Interment will take place in Rosedale Cemetery at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined. As an expression of sympathy, donations in Gene’s name may be made to The Moose Jaw Humane Society, Box 1658 Station Main, Moose Jaw, SK S6H 7K7 (mjhs.ca). Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane. Michelle Surtees Funeral Director 306-693-4550
I replaced Gene at Sears as the building maintenance person. That was 16 years ago last January. I called upon his assistance on more than one occasion. I always enjoyed having conversations with Gene. Will miss you friend. Sincere condolences to the family.
I bought a house that Gene built on the 600 block of Athabasca Street. When I put it up for sale, as I was downsizing, Gene called me and asked if her could visit the house before it changed hands. He toured the house sharing with me his memories of designing and building the house. He was particularly proud of the cupboards he built for the house! We actually grew up in the same neighbourhood, the 100 block of Coteau Street East. He was a very kind young man! My mom and I moved down to a small apartment on the 200 block of Manitoba Street East. I was going into grade eight that year and should have technically gone to Victoria School for my last year of Elementary School. Instead, I faked my address, and walked all the way under the subway and up the hill to good old King Edward School I had attended since Kindergarten. Gene was often heading downtown, but turned around when he encountered me, to give me a ride up to King Edward School and have a friendly chat with me to cheer me up as he knew I was going through a very stressful time after my parents separated. Over the years, I always looked forward to chatting with Gene whenever we ran into each other! I’m sure his family have many proud memories of his accomplishments and the things he built for them!
