Dorothy Adeline Curtis (née Sheldon)
Our mother, Dorothy Adeline Curtis (née Sheldon), passed away peacefully with family by her side on Saturday, May 14th, 2016. We rejoice knowing she is back in the arms of our father. Predeceased by her mother, Gladys; father, Lincoln; brother, Percy; infant granddaughter, Laura; and her husband, Lyall; Dorothy leaves to rejoice in her life well lived, her children: Arthur (Nancy) of Pender Island, Keith (June) of Moose Jaw and Evelyn (Paul) Marcil of Moose Jaw; stepson, Larry of Dartmouth, NS; all the grandchildren who managed to bring a twinkle to her eyes and smile to her face: Mary Anne (Terry), Tony (Robin), Andrea, Bradley (Lyndsie), Brooke (Matt), Dawn (Doug), Allison (Kristian), Kristin (Jeff), Jill (Joey) and Ben; 21 great-grandchildren; and sister, Joyce (Bill) Lipsett of Nanton, AB. Also cherishing many memories are her special daughters-in-law, Cris of Regina and Liz of Edmonton. Dorothy was born on March 8th, 1920 on her parents homestead in the Old Wives district, with her Grandma Addie Sheldon acting as midwife. She stayed at home helping on the farm until 1947 when her younger sister Joyce was old enough to take over those responsibilities, allowing her to move to Moose Jaw. In September 1948, she started nursing training at the Providence Hospital and graduated with the General Proficiency Medal and had the honor of being Class Valedictorian in May 1951. It was while in nursing training she met a young farmer who had an accident with a power takeoff and had come to the hospital to have the damage repaired! That man was our father, Lyall, and the rest is a story of love and mutual respect which grew throughout their years together. It warms our hearts knowing they are reunited. A Celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held on Thursday, May 19th, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in Moose Jaw Funeral Home. One of Mom’s last wishes was that we come together in joy and laughter to remember her and the life she managed to fill with love and learning. In keeping with those wishes, after a short service, we will gather for a time of fellowship and remembrance and we hope many in attendance will share a memory with everyone of the beautiful person we were honored to call Mom, Grandma, Nanny, Nana, Sister, Aunt and friend. Interment will follow at a later date at the Bateman Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, use your unique talents and good fortune to help someone in your community in need of a friend, a helping hand or a smile. In appreciation of the amazing staff and management at the Dr. F.H. Wigmore Hospital, donations in Dorothy’s memory can be made to the Moose Jaw Health Foundation, 55 Diefenbaker Drive, Moose Jaw, SK S6J 0C2. Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane. Gary McDowell, Funeral Director 306-693-4550
