Mary Belcourt
It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our Baba, mother, sister and aunt, Mary Belcourt at the age of 93 at Pioneer Lodge on November 24th, 2010. Mom was born on November 21st, 1917 on the family farm in Canora, SK. to Nettie and William Habuza. She came to Moose Jaw at the age of 14 to live with her sister Annie. She attended school for a short time, and then worked at the King’s Hotel and the Harwood as a chambermaid, then at the Uptown Café as a waitress as well. Mom met and married Dad in October 1953 in River’s, MB. They were posted to Quebec City and Sherwood, Quebec, then to France in 1956. They returned to Sherwood in 1958. Dad retired from the Army in 1966 and they moved to Moose Jaw. Mom loved camping and fishing and had many fond memories camping at Good Spirit Lake and Douglas Park. She loved making pies, cookies, perogies and cabbage rolls for her grandchildren. She loved gardening and this past spring, we planted a small garden. Mom was a member of St. Vladimir’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, where she had many wonderful friends and was honored to be a part of the congregation. One of Mom’s greatest joys was her two grandchildren. She and Dad enjoyed many band performances and watching their granddaughter horse ride. She was predeceased by her husband Gabe in 2005; her parents, Nettie and William Habuza; 3 brothers, Jack, John and Steve; and 2 sisters, Annie and Lena. Mary is survived by her loving daughter Lisa and son-in-law Greg; her grandchildren, Gregory and Becca; 2 sisters, Kay Philips and Olga Duchak; sister-in-law Rose Manning; and numerous nieces and nephews. We would like to thank all of the nurses who looked after Mom while she was in the hospital, ER, ICU, Surgery, in the OR and on Medicine. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Miller for all his wonderful care and attention and also to Dr. Sanderson who came to see Mom everyday.
