January 24th, 1913 – April 9th, 2013
Elsie Bader, aged 100 years of Moose Jaw, SK, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 9th, 2013 at Extendicare. The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, April 15th, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the First Free Methodist Church, 375 Hochelaga St. W. with Pastor Barry Taylor officiating. A Time of Visitation for Family and Friends will be held on Sunday, April 14th, 2013 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Moose Jaw Funeral Home. Elsie was born to George and Mary Straub, the ninth of eleven children in Vernon, BC. She grew up on the family farm at Hodgeville and later Moose Jaw and Brownlee. Elsie attended Normal School in Moose Jaw and then began teaching in the rural areas of Caron and Hodgeville. She met and married Gus Bader in 1940 and together they worked and raised their children in the community of Hodgeville. Elsie taught piano and accordion, and with her students presented many unique recitals. She was also active with the Girl Guides and the Evangelical United Brethren Church. A lot of relatives visited Elsie’s mother who was living with them, so Elsie was always prepared to entertain and cook for company at a moment’s notice. Gus and Elsie retired to Swift Current in 1978, enjoying the company of family and friends and keeping very active in the church. After the passing of Gus, Elsie and Rosalie moved to Moose Jaw and built a house together, where she resided until three months before her passing and with the birth of her great-grandson…four generations of Baders resided together. She was in charge of the J.O.Y. group at the First Free Methodist Church organizing activities for the seniors. Elsie was a passionate gardener her entire life and an avid reader (using her own Kindle at 99 years of age). She also enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, oil painting, crafts and collecting old dishes and antiques. She attended many craft and trade shows over the years, even into her 90’s. She had a keen interest in Biblical Prophecy and events occurring in Israel and Middle East. She was happiest when she was surrounded by family, enjoying their various musical talents. Elsie was the true matriarch of the family till the end. Predeceased by her husband, Gus Bader (1983); son, Ron Bader (2009); brothers: George, Henry, Fred, Ed and Bill; sisters: Ella, Hilda, Leona, Helen and Mary. Elsie will be lovingly remembered by her daughter and caregiver, Rosalie Bader of Moose Jaw; daughter, Joy (Dave) Nelson of Saskatoon and their family Mary Joy Nelson of Kentucky, Jonathan Nelson of Outlook, Jeremy of Saskatoon, and Vanessa (Beau) Davis of Kentucky; daughter-in-law, Shelley Bader of Moose Jaw and her family Melissa (Steve) Schiml of Saskatoon, Matthew (Kimber) Bader and great-grandson Brayden of Moose Jaw; sister-in-law, Elsie Straub of Moose Jaw; brother-in-law, John (Bertha) Bader of BC; and numerous nieces and nephews. As an expression of sympathy, donations in Elsie’s name may be made to International Childcare Ministries of the Free Methodist Church or the Gideons. A tree will be planted in Israel in Elsie’s honor. Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane. James Murdock, Funeral Director. 693-4550.
