Hugh John Ewen
It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Hugh John Ewen. Jack passed away peacefully on September 11th, 2008 in the Moose Jaw Union Hospital. Jack was born on June 25th, 1918 in Govan, Saskatchewan, where he also took his schooling. Jack enlisted in 1941, serving in Holland and France with the Eight Reconnaissance Regiment during WWII and was discharged in 1945. He then married Georgina Hay on December 8th, 1947. Jack started farming in 1948 south east of Riverhurst. Jack joined the Legion and was a member for 62 years, a charter member of the Riverhurst Lions Club for 40 years and a member of the Riverhurst 50 Plus Club. Jack enjoyed playing cards and was an avid pool player. Jack and Georgina moved in to town for the winters, building their own home in 1981. Jack enjoyed family gatherings, coffee row and woodworking. Jack was predeceased by his parents William and Anne Ewen, siblings Isabel Gallinger, Barnet Ewen, Betty Anderson and Marion Treacher. Jack is lovingly remembered and will always be cherished by his wife of 60 years Georgina; brother Stewart (Frieda); his children Bob (Colleen), Doreen (Ben) Penner, Gary (Dawn), Heather (Edgar) Hatley; grandchildren Brent and Kendra Ewen; Dennis (Donna) Penner and Kevin (Debra) Penner, Brett, Jeffery and Kristopher Ewen, Krista (J.P.) Martin, Ryan (Heather) Hatley, and Blaine Hatley; and 8 great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the Riverhurst Community Hall. Pastor Wendy Gibson will officiate. Legion Rites will be conducted by Tom Newton of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #213. Interment will take place in the Riverhurst Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Jack’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.
