Darl Edwin Hicks
Darl Edwin Hicks of Moose Jaw and formerly of the Marquis District, passed away peacefully at the Moose Jaw Union Hospital with his family by his side on May 18th, 2011 at the age of 93. Born at Marquis on April 11th, 1918, he received his education at Marquis and went on to attend the School of Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan. Darl was a member of the Junior Grain Club in the early 1930’s and with the help of his father produced and prepared a sample of “Marquis” wheat at the world grain show in Regina. He was a member of the Canadian Seed Growers Association and qualified as a “Select Seed” grower. Darl joined Sask Wheat Pool and served on the Marquis committee and succeeded his father as chairman in 1949. He later was elected as delegate and served for many years in this capacity. In 1978 Darl ran for the New Democratic Party in the Sask Election, in the Thunder Creek constituency. He was active in the Co-operative Movement, Farmers Union and other provincial and national farm organizations. Darl retired from farming in his later years and was fortunate to find true happiness with his best friend and companion, Irene who showed him that there was more to life than hard work. They travelled and spent many hours with her family on special occasions and he was welcomed and loved dearly by all of them. Darl was predeceased by his parents Laura Alma and Claude Edwin, and brothers Dale and Howard. He is survived by his best friend and companion, Irene Nyhus and family; niece, Carol Sawatzki (Wolf) and family; nephew, Clair Hicks (Flo); nephew, Lyle and niece, Shari and families. Thanks to the staff at the Union Hospital for their efforts to make Darl’s last days comfortable. Special thanks to Shannon Arens for the extra attention paid to Darl’s needs while in hospital. A Private Family Memorial Service was held at Moose Jaw Funeral Home. Memorialization has taken place at Sunset Cemetery.
