Donald Roy Shields
Donald Roy Shields of Brownlee, SK, passed away Saturday, July 9th, 2011 at the age of 82 years with his family by his side. Don was born November 26th, 1928 in Cut Knife, SK. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, July 14th, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 1064 3rd Ave. N.W., Moose Jaw, SK. Father Rick Krofchek will be the presiding celebrant. An evening prayer service will be held on Wednesday, July 13th, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane, Moose Jaw, SK. A private family interment will be held on Friday, July 15th, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. at Rosedale Cemetery. Don was predeceased by his parents, Roy and Edith Shields; stepmother, Lena Shields; his wife of 49 years, Kathleen; son, Robert (Bob); as well as other family members and special friend, Elsie Spier. Don and Kay were married April 3rd, 1951 and together they proudly raised ten children. Don worked hard in all his jobs while raising his family. His career included Buying Grain, Bulk Fuel Dealer, Semi Driver and SGI Agent before he achieved his dream of owning his own farm. His love of cattle drew him into farming, which he continued up until present alongside his oldest son Don. In his younger years he was an avid curler and shared this love with many of his children as well he was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Don worked hard through the week so he could relax with his family and friends on weekends, whether it was going to the lake to water ski, fish, camp, have a challenging game of cards, or simply watch one of his favorite John Wayne “the Duke” movies. Don also had a passion for square dancing and made numerous new friends he referred to as his square dance family. He will be forever missed and lovingly remembered by Don (Judi): Jordon and Brendon; Ron (Cathy); Bob’s children: Scott (Amelia) and Amanda (Steve); Yvonne (Kelvin): Kurtis and Michael; Patti(Larry): Crystal, Matthew and Amy (Scott); Ken (Pat): Jonathon, Nathan and Tennessee; Jerry: Kelsie and Aidan; Joye (Russ): Dustin (Suzanne) and Kayla (Caleb); Peter; Paul (Andrea): Maria, Kayla and Chloe; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Fern Palmer of Davidson, SK; brother, Gordon (Nell) Shields of Saskatoon, SK; sister, Carol (George) Rathgeber of Saskatoon, SK; cousins, nieces, nephews, special friend Elain Haaf, and all who have shared in his life. Flowers are gratefully declined. As an expression of sympathy, contributions to the Moose Jaw Health Foundation, c/o 455 Fairford St. E., Moose Jaw, SK S6H 1H3 would be appreciated by the family.
