Hazel Pearl Coates
Hazel Pearl Coates (nee Hyndman) passed peacefully with family by her side at Moose Jaw Union Hospital on Friday, December 21st, 2012 at the age of 91. Hazel was born on August 28th, 1921 in Scotland, Ontario. She was raised on a farm 2 miles from Windham Centre. Once she completed high school, she found employment in the tobacco factory in Delhi, ON. Hazel met Roy Coates while he was stationed at London, ON with the Army during the Second World War. Hazel subsequently came out to Saskatchewan to meet his family and they were married in Moose Jaw on December 22nd, 1941. Eventually, they returned to the Shamrock area where they purchased their first farm land, including their home quarter, in 1947. With a growing family, they decided to move to Onida, South Dakota in 1956. From there, Roy continued to farm, but also did custom combining and trucking while Hazel worked as a nurse’s aide in the Onida hospital. Dad was away a lot, but Mom kept the family well loved and cared for, even while doing shift work. In 1966, they returned to their farm in Saskatchewan where Mom continued to care for the family, keeping a large garden and raising turkeys and chickens. As the children left home, Mom and Dad were able to pursue their passion for square dancing, meeting many life long friends. They also traveled and entertained family and friends. Mom will always be remembered as a marvelous cook (her baking was incredible) and you never left her home hungry. Mom was able to stay on the farm until shortly before her passing. The family would like to thank Dr. Brown and Dr. Majid, the staff on medicine and at Pioneer Lodge for their wonderful care. Hazel was predeceased by her parents, Archie and Violet Hyndman; her step-mother, Mildred Hyndman; brothers-in-law, Glen Coates and Albert (Doris) Hagerman. She is survived by her loving husband of 71 years, Roy; sons, Wayne (Bev) Coates and Dale (Linda); daughters, Sharon (Chuck) Hank and Marilyn (Ken) Sanders; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Donna Hojenski and brother-in-law, Dennis (Jean) Coates. A Private Family Funeral will be held to celebrate Hazel’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations in Hazel’s name may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane. Calvin Gammel, Funeral Director. 693-4550
