Shirley Farago
Shirley Farago, beloved wife, mother and sister, passed away peacefully on April 12th, 2012 at the Union Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Shirley was born in Saskatoon to Joseph and Adele Assie on March 9th, 1949. She grew up in Viscount and lived her entire life in Saskatchewan. At the tender age of just 19, she married Don Farago and they had two great kids, Derek and Clarice. Don and Shirley were married for 43 years and one of their favorite things to do was to travel to Las Vegas for fun and adventure. A treasured family tradition was to have Christmas dinner at the spa. She also received a lot of enjoyment shopping for Don’s designer T-shirts, her kids, grandsons and for herself. Shirley was a devoted grandmother to her two precious grandsons, Adam and Mason Brotzel. Shirley was a great wife, mother, sister, daughter and friend to many. She enjoyed visiting with friends over coffee or over the phone and playing scrabble. Shirley’s best attribute was her cheerfulness and ability to lift other’s spirits with a witty remark and a heartfelt laugh. Shirley was a compassionate and hard working psychiatric nurse and worked at Valley View for 34 years and Extendicare for 5 years in Moose Jaw. Shirley is survived by her husband, Don Farago; children, Derek Farago (Carla Propp) and Clarice (Shane) Brotzel; grandsons, Adam and Mason Brotzel; mother-in-law, Ellen Farago; sisters, Leona Assie (Richard Corbeil) and Arlene (David) White; brothers: Edward (Carol) Assie, George (Kathy) Assie and Gil (Brenda) Assie; sisters-in-law, Joan (Robert) Callaghan and Gail (Bob) Lawson; brother-in-law, Wes Farago (Myrna Ferster) and many nieces and nephews. Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Adele Assie; sister, Flo Kitz; and father-in-law, Alex Farago. A special thanks to Dr. Van Rensberg, whom Shirley thought was the best doctor she could have had. The nurses in palliative care at Union Hospital were spectacular in caring for her. At Shirley’s request, no Funeral Service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Nixon Fund, a medical support fund for Shirley’s great-nephew, Nixon Lawson. Funds should be payable to “DONATION – NIXON LAWSON IN TRUST” Address: 4938 Gudereit Way, Regina, SK S4X 4T8. For more information visit www.facebook.com/TheNixonFund. Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane. Gary McDowell, Funeral Director. 693-4550
I remember the lovely times I spent with Shirley when I would spend a weekend at Aunt Adele and Uncle Joe’s home in Viscount when I was attending Sion Academy in Saskatoon which Florence was also attending at the time. Although I would go with Florence, Shirley and I hung out more as Florence was busy with her friends and not available most of the weekend. I do recall attending their wedding and the lovely bride and couple they made. Sadly after leaving Sion and my weekend in Viscount, Sask. we lost touch until her wedding.
