GEORGE HENRY SIMPKINS
March 13th, 1927 – July 9th, 2012
George Simpkins, long time resident of Moose Jaw, passed away peacefully at Pineview Lodge in Nipawin, SK on July 9th, 2012. George Henry Simpkins was born in 1927 in Crane Valley, SK and spent his adult life in Moose Jaw. He was the third and youngest son of Rose and Frank Simpkins. George “The Kid” was a self proclaimed “Rink Rat” in his younger days, and that is where he met the love of his life, Helen Bruce. George and Helen were married in 1951 and were blessed with the birth of their only son Kenneth George in 1952. Ken and his family were most definitely their pride and joy. Simpkins Electric was the Moose Jaw family business and always kept George busy. Whether working or on days off, you would find his apple box of tools very near. He had a reputation for meticulous work and was always ready to lend a helping hand. George was one of the few people on the planet that could get anything back into its original box. He spent many happy hours in his garage workshop creating masterpieces and fixing things that many of us would have given up on. After retirement, George and Helen enjoyed many activities together including fundraising for MS, spending time with friends and family, coffee with the crew at A&W, and watching curling on TV. George had more than 2 green thumbs and Helen definitely appreciated his talents and encouraged his outdoor efforts in their beautifully landscaped backyard. George was known fondly by his four grandchildren as “Gramps”. Gramps and Grams loved children so much that it was always a special and fun time visiting with them. The last years of George’s life were spent in Nipawin, so he could be close to Ken and Deb. Moose Jaw and his friends there were always dear to his heart. George was predeceased in 2009 by his wife, Helen Louise Simpkins; his parents, Frank and Rose Simpkins; brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Doris Simpkins; and sister-in-law, Loreen Simpkins. George will be lovingly remembered by his son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Debby Simpkins; brother, Ken Simpkins and family; grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Melanie (Brett) Litvenenko, Karsen, Jordyn, Marren; Brooke Simpkins (Kurtis Rideout); Fielding (Lacey) Simpkins, Madison; and Hartley Simpkins (Natalie Jarrett). A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 21st, 2012 at 3:30 p.m. in Moose Jaw Funeral Home. Reverend Doug Shepherd will officiate with private memorialization in Moose Jaw Crematorium and Columbarium. Flowers are respectfully declined. As an expression of sympathy, donations in George’s name may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, 150 Albert St., Regina, SK S5R 2N2 or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Sask., 279 3rd Ave. N., Saskatoon, SK S7K 2H8.
