Arthur James Houghton
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Arthur James Houghton on Wednesday, April 17th, 2013 at the age of 91 years. He was born in Moose Jaw on November 27th, 1921, the son of Arthur and Astrid Houghton. He left this world in the arms of his beloved wife of 67 years, Margaret. Margaret was a war bride who met Art during the Second World War where he served as a Sgt in the 7th Anti Tank Corp., RCA. Art leaves four children: Arthur (Wendy), Linda (Chris), Donna (Pat) and Colin (AnnMarie); 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Harry; and sisters, Edna and Elaine. He leaves behind sister, Alma. After the war, Art opened Washer & Appliance on Main Street with his brother Harry and ran the business for many years, until Sears came calling and offered them both a position in their newly opened service department. He worked there until his retirement. He was always available whenever anyone had an appliance that needed fixing.
You give so much to others, we’re very proud of you.
You’re never too busy to help, with what people ask you to do.
Awards and praise you’ve been given,
by others who’ve seen your good deeds.
It’s always been a part of your life, seeing to other’s needs.
He was the Manager of the Moose Jaw Wild Animal Park and it was something about which he was very passionate. He was a lifetime member of the Lions Club, joining the club in October 1949. He also served as Manager of the Moose Jaw Lions Band for many years. Art enjoyed the Toronto Blue Jays, the Moose Jaw Warriors, the Saskatchewan Roughriders and also Monday Night Blind Bowling with the Moose Jaw Lions. He loved going to the casino where all the staff knew him and treated him so kindly, “Double, double, Art?”. Art’s last days were spent as a resident of Extendicare where he was treated with such kindness and his family are so grateful to all the staff there. A Private Family Service will be held in Rosedale Cemetery at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined. Friends so wishing may make a donation in Art’s name to a charity of their choice.
A helping hand to all he knew so kind, so generous, and true,
on earth he nobly did his best, grant him, Jesus, heavenly rest.
Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane. James Murdock, Funeral Director. 693-4550
