Livio Sauro
Livio Sauro passed away on Friday, July 4th, 2014 at 4:15 p.m. at the Moose Jaw Union Hospital, after celebrating his 90th birthday. Born the 5th son, on July 2nd, 1924 to Nicolina Faciano and Libero Sauro, Livio’s mother contracted tuberculosis while carrying him and passed away on August 2nd, 1924 when he was only 1 month old. He spent his first few years of life living with his maternal grandmother in Montreal Quebec, until he was 4 years old and his father remarried Clementina Lazalotta (whom he knew as his Ma) and he was reunited with his brothers in Niagara Falls, Ontario. He grew up experiencing a lot of hardships and through those hardships he learnt valuable lessons. On his 20th birthday, he received an official request from the Army to report for duty. After his basic training, he was sent to Nova Scotia where he was selected to train as a cook. This training would be of great value to him in his civilian life as he was an amazing cook. Livio (known as Lee) met Bernice New, whom he married and had 5 daughters and a son with. He was the best Dad anyone could ever have and through his own childhood mishaps, he made sure to raise his kids with love and kindness, while guiding them with his words of wisdom to do right. He worked as a butcher for many years in a supermarket before opening his own business called “Lee’s Fresh Meats”. His children grew up working for him in his shop, where he taught them the value of hard work and the dollar. Lee made many friends wherever he went and always had the people around him laughing. He had a sense of humor that would bring you to your knees in laughter. Always joking and his quick witted comebacks made strangers around him want to talk with him more. His huge blue eyes and Italian nose were two of his signature features and jokes surrounded that nose for years to come. Comments like “the nose knows” or “I smell trouble” are just to name a few. Dad enjoyed his Caesars at his favorite pub and cheering on the Toronto Blue Jays! He was a loving Papa and Bucka. Lee lived in Thornhill, Ontario until January 22nd, 2011 when he moved to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to live with his daughter, where he resided until his passing. His last few years of life were full of love and laughter, and he was very pleased to get the opportunity to see his grandchildren and great-grandchildren here in Saskatchewan, some whom he had never met before. He enjoyed seeing familiar faces and having people around him. He passed peacefully with his family at his side. Lee is survived by his sister, Sylvia (Jack); brother, Elvino (Linda); sister, Cinna (John); several nieces and nephews; his wife, Bernice and their children: Sandy (Kerry, Brian, Stacey, Amanda, Darnell, Joel and Kaylin), Brenda (Kinsie and Kayley), Cindy (Glenn and James), Cheryl (Pete, Scott, Jennifer, Jeff, Mike and Steven), Lisa (Jessica, Karson, Kolton, Perry and Emma), and Darryl (Nicole, Kristopher, Kyle, Kameron and Kendall). We would like to thank the staff at the Maguire Center at Providence Place for the good times they provided for Lee when he attended. He loved having an audience to entertain with his humor. In keeping with Lee’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Come and Go Tea will take place on Saturday, July 12th, 2014 at the Eagles Club, 561 Home St W, Moose Jaw, SK from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. Donations in Lee’s name may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane. Gary McDowell, Funeral Director 306-693-4550
