Ada Jean Checkley
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ada Jean on Monday, November 1st, 2017 at the age of 91 years. Ada Jean Murphy was born October 18th, 1926 in Chaplin SK where she lived for 81 years until she relocated to Regina, SK to live with her daughter Shauna. Later Jean lived at Casa Bella Care Home for her final six years. Jean was predeceased by her husband, Russel and daughters, Donna and Bonnie. Jean will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Bill and Craig Checkley; daughters, Brenda (Grant) Osaduik, Lynette Wallace and Shauna Checkley. Jean was a marvel. A child of the depression. She grew up on a homestead north of Chaplin. She did not attend school until she was 12 years old. Yet she completed all 12 years and graduated as valedictorian of her class with her peers six years later. Her graduating average was 93%. Jean than went to Normal School in Moose Jaw, Sk. She took her first teaching assignment in the Val Jean area. After that, Jean married Russel Edgar Checkley of Kelstern, SK. They lived in Chaplin where they raised seven children. In time, there was 13 grand kids, 18 great-grand kids, and 2 great-great-grand kids. Jean went back to university later in life and completed her Bachelor of Education, graduating with distinction. She then taught in Chaplin and Hodgeville for the next 15 years. Jean was very active in the community, attending the United Church and was part of the UCW, as well as the local Legion. A passionate person, Jean loved art, gardening, all animals, especially cats. She followed politics and current events closely. She delighted in coffee, the newspaper and crossword puzzles. The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, November 8th, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. in the Moose Jaw Funeral Home. Pastor Dave Foley will officiate. Burial will take place in Chaplin Cemetery at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined.
