Maxine Mary Hicks
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Maxine Mary Hicks on Saturday, May 11, 2024, with family by her side.
Maxine was born to Fred & Betty Fiske on May 6, 1936, in Tisdale, SK. She was raised on the family farm near Loreburn and attended school in the district. After high school Maxine worked at the Moose Jaw Training School, then at Federated Co-op in Regina.
Maxine met Bob through friends, married in 1957 and farmed in the Marquis area for many years. She was a key partner in Bob’s projects and adventures – from raising laying hens to Chianina cattle to hogs. In the early 90’s they started a family-owned seed business on the farm and later became Sask. Crop Insurance agents. In the winter months, Maxine and Bob joined forces to manage the curling rink in Moose Jaw. Maxine assisted in the office and also created the Curlers Shop, selling equipment and clothing for the roaring game. After retiring from farming, they managed curling clubs in Red Deer and High River. In 2004, they retired again and returned to Moose Jaw where they took up beekeeping and honey processing. In 2022, Maxine moved to Saskatoon to be closer to family. Maxine enjoyed music, dancing, curling, camping, baking, travelling, golfing, skiing, volunteer work and most of all, spending time with her family.
Maxine will be lovingly remembered by her children, Kim (Di) of North Carolina, Kevin (Melissa) of Toronto, Shelley (Kelvin) Meadows of Saskatoon; her six grandchildren, Chelsea (John), Taylor (Tori), Kirstin (Chris), Shae (Alexa), Dash, Piper; her 5 great-grandchildren, Brooks, Rachael, Ben, Archer and Finn, as well as her sisters Helen Rieger, Wendy (Barry) Cafferata; brothers Ron, Gerald (Sylvia), Allen (Bernadine); sisters-in-law Ev & Donna.
She was predeceased by her loving husband Bob; parents Fred & Betty; sisters Fern Peardon, Kae Holmes, and twin sister Marjorie Russell; brothers Burrell, Garry and Glen; sisters in law Vida, Shirley, Margaret, Ruth, Vivian; brothers in law Lym, Don, Al, Vern, Cyril, Wesley.
A Celebration of Maxine’s Life will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at 1:30 pm at the Moose Jaw Funeral Home. Adam Driscoll will officiate, and interment will take place at Sunset Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the charity of your choice on Maxine’s behalf. Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane. So sorry to hear of Maxine’s passing. I always enjoyed visiting with Max and Bob, delightful people. Maxine always had a twinkle in her eye and laughter and love followed her. She was fiercely proud of her family. My condolences to the family. I am so glad I had the privilege of knowing your Mom.
Auntie Max’s legacy reflects the true gem that she was. She had a special mix of qualities and passed forward the twinkle (or glint) in her eyes and her big smile. She will be missed, but happily and proudly remembered. Much love to my cousins and the whole of our family.
Maxine always made great sandwiches and treated me so well during my time working at the seed plant. Sincerest condolences to the family.
